Facial skin rejuvenation is best accomplished via the stimulation of healthy replacement tissue. Factors including pollutants, sun exposure, a loss of collagen and other proteins in the skin layers, and a decreased amount of moisture in the skin all contribute to wrinkling and discoloration. Facial peels are a proven means of smoothing away the wrinkles and evening out the skin tone.
Various peel treatments are performed today, each of which targets specific concerns. When we consult with our clients, we suggest one of these treatments based on our examination of the facial skin. We’re interested in the skin tone, the amount of melanin in the skin, and the severity and depth of any blemishes and other areas of hyperpigmentation. Below, we offer an overview of the various peel treatments and what they can do to improve the overall condition and appearance of the facial skin.
Superficial Peel Treatments
This is a gentle peel treatment that affects only the epidermal layer. It’s the most commonly performed facial peel, and it can be completed in only minutes. We wash the skin thoroughly, and then we apply a mild acid to the surface. The acid dries up the epidermal layer within minutes. We then wash off the acid using a special solvent.
After a few days, the epidermal layer begins to flake away. This stimulates rapid creation of a new outer layer of skin. This new layer is healthier, more moisture-balanced, and even in tone. A superficial peel is recommended for those who wish to clear away surface scarring as well as smooth out fine wrinkles.
This peel is performed in the same manner as a superficial peel, but the acid is allowed to set on the skin for a longer period of time. Some of the dermis is affected by the treatment. This type of peel treatment improves the appearance of deeper scarring and blemishes. If the main problem is wrinkling and discoloration due to overexposure to the sun, a deeper peel is performed.
Are You a Candidate?
Until recently, people with darker skin tone were not considered good candidates for facial peels. However, today’s modified acid mixes can be customized in terms of the strength, pH level, and overall composition. Facial peels can now be successfully performed no matter how much melanin a person’s skin contains. Peel treatments are simpler than most other types of skin rejuvenation. They treat a variety of problems. Many other skin treatments address only one main concern. Also, the results of a chemical peel last for quite some time, and all but the deep peel treatment are repeatable at regular intervals.
